Peter Pohl, CEO
In 1990, Mr. Pohl began his ambitious career by co-founding GATC Biotech. He went on to earn a degree in Administrative Sciences from the University of Konstanz in 1993. He became the head of GATC Biotech in 1996 and has been the company’s CEO ever since. In 2004, Mr. Pohl became a member of the Board of BioDeutschland e.V and in 2008, he co-founded and became a member of the Executive Board of BioLAGO e.V. He then co-founded and served as CEO of the non-invasive prenatal diagnostics company, LifeCodexx from 2007 until 2010. In 2010, Mr. Pohl assumed the role of Head of the Supervisory Board of LifeCodexx.
Marcus Benz, Ph.D., COO
Dr. Benz holds a degree in biology from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and Northern Arizona University, U.S. He earned his Ph.D. in Microbial Ecology at the University of Konstanz. Dr. Benz then worked as a quality manager from 2000 to 2003. From 2003 to 2007, he was employed as Head of Production at GATC Biotech. In 2007, Dr. Benz was promoted to COO of the company, a position he still holds today.
Jochen Schäfer, Senior Director Sales and Customer Care
Mr. Schäfer holds a degree in applied biology and an Executive Education Certificate from the St. Gallen Management Seminar for Small-to-Medium-Sized Enterprises. Prior to joining GATC Biotech in 1999, he spent 11 years as a research assistant in the plant biology field both at the University of Erlangen and at the University of Wuppertal, Germany. His main achievements as responsible for the sequencing group at GATC Biotech include the establishment and optimisation of the company’s lab process automation, logistics services, the online platform myGATC, as well as overall business presence in the Sanger field. He was also the project leader for the addition of new lab sites in London and Düsseldorf, as well as for the centralisation of Sanger production in Cologne due to logistic improvements. In 2007, Mr. Schäfer was promoted to Director Custom Sequencing. Since 2016 Mr. Schäfer as Senior Director Sales and Customer Care is responsible for the whole Sales and Customer Care Team (Video SALES@GATC: Jochen Schäfer).
Kerstin Stangier, Ph.D., Director Production
Dr. Stangier holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and chemistry. She joined the GATC Biotech team in 2002 as a sales representative with her main responsibility being the company’s business development. She was eventually promoted to the position of Director Production for Constance and Cologne. Dr. Stangier has been a part of the Executive Committee of the Industrial Association White Biotechnology (IWBio) since 2012. (Video PRODUCTION@GATC: Dr. Kerstin Stangier)
Anita Burkhardt, Director Inside Customer Care
Mrs. Burkhardt holds a degree in business administration. She joined GATC Biotech as a sales assistant with the main task of facilitating the development of the French subsidiary of the company. She was promoted to Director Customer Service in 2007. Mrs. Burkhardt assumed responsibility for the entire Inside Customer Care Team, as well as for the Logistics department in 2016. Boris Scheufele, Director Finance
Mr. Scheufele holds a degree in finance and accounting. Prior to joining GATC Biotech, he gained more than 10 years of experience as an auditor in the IT field and as a manager of commerce and business management in different industries. He became part of the GATC Biotech team in 2011 as Director Finance and has held the position ever since. His main responsibilities include all matters related to accounting, invoicing, controlling, auditing, liquidity management and tax consultancy.
Marco Pietschmann, Director IT & Quality Management
Mr. Pietschmann holds degrees in information management and applied biology, as well as an Executive Education Certificate from the St. Gallen Management Seminar for Small- to Medium-Sized Enterprises. Since joining GATC Biotech in 2000, he has been responsible for several interdisciplinary projects in the areas of process automation, laboratory information management systems, bioinformatic pipelines and multiple lab- and site setups. Today, as Director IT & Quality Management he is responsible for the following core supporting teams: IT Operations, IT Software Engineering and Internal Services. Tobias Paprotka, Ph.D., Director Research & Development (R&D)
Dr. Paprotka is biologist and holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and virology. He gained international research experience as a visiting scientist in Brazil and as a post-doctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute in the USA. For his research he received the Norman P. Salzman Memorial Award of the National Institutes of Health in 2011. He is first author of several peer reviewed publications and published in e.g. Science. In 2012, Dr. Paprotka joined GATC Biotech as Head of the R&D department and became Director of R&D in 2014. He is responsible for the development and implementation of new laboratory protocols/workflows, the Bioinformatics and the establishment of scientific cooperation’s.
