Le séquençage de l’information génomique des microorganismes d’un biotope permet d’identifier tous les gènes présents dans les organismes et encore inconnus afin d’obtenir des informations sur l’activité et le potentiel métaboliques, ainsi que sur la complexité du métagénome considéré.
Ce séquençage peut être réalisé à différents niveaux :
