New MLPA tool now available in GeneMarker™

State College PA USA, SoftGenetics LLC announced that it has added MLPA analysis and reporting into its GeneMarker software for the analysis of genotyping and AFLP* data. MLPA, Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification, is a rapidly growing technique used in the detection of exon deletions in the human BRCA1, MSH2 and MLH1 genes associated with breast cancer and colon cancer, as well as trisomies found in Down Syndrome (47, XX+21). Coupled with the GeneMarker software, MLPA is an efficient tool to categorize abnormalities in cell lines and tumor samples.

GeneMarker is the first genotyping software that combines the required analysis parameters with clinical reporting & printing, and comparative fragment analysis of patient to normal. The integration creates a seamless process from analysis to reporting, eliminating the current tedious, mistake prone and time-consuming practice of manually transferring analysis data to spreadsheets.

Use of the integrated MLPA tool automatically transfers separation data into the software’s “trace comparison” function, which provides quantification based upon peak height or peak area to identify the gain and loss of allele peaks. The trace comparison report displays the peak-height ratio, peak height or peak area for each detected allele peak. The user also has the option to display allele peak status of loss, equivalence and gain as --1, 0, and 1.

Maurisa Riley, Senior Technical Service Representative at SoftGenetics, comments: “The new MLPA feature will efficiently and quickly analyze MLPA data, while eliminating the transfer of results to a 3rd party platform, creating a unified system for this important and novel disease analysis technique.”

GeneMarker software accepts output data from any major electrophoresis system, capillary or slab gel, and features automated correction of PCR and instrumental injection bias normally associated with electrophoretic analysis of DNA. Development collaborators have reported a > 10 % accuracy increase when performing analysis with GeneMarker when compared to other fragment analysis software packages on the same data sets.
