- GATC Biotech SARL, the French subsidiary, with headquarters in Marseille, is founded in August. General Manager is Dr. Marjolaine Baldo.
- Two additional employees are acquired for the English subsidiary.
- More than 30 genomes were sequenced in GATC’s laboratories to date.

At a meeting of all groups working on the yeast genome in Manchester, Thomas Pohl promised André Goffeau, director of the project, to analyse a cosmid within 4 weeks in publication quality – he kept his promise! |

- Foundation of the „Gesellschaft für Analyse-Technik und Consulting mbH ” as Europe's first sequencing company with a seed capital of 25.000 Deutsche Mark (approx. 12.000 Euro).
- DM 2.000 (approx. 1.000 Euro) were spent for laboratory equipment.
- Thomas Pohl himself designed GATC's first logo.
