Die Sequenzierung der genetischen Information (Genom oder Transkriptom) der Population eines Biotops ermöglicht es, alle dort vorkommenden Organismen zu identifizieren, um Informationen über Stoffwechselaktivität, -potential und die prinzipielle Komplexität des betrachteten Metagenoms zu erhalten.
Die Sequenzierung kann auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen erfolgen:
- Ganze Metagenome
- Prokaryotische cDNA
- 16S / 18S RNA
